IDEATION
Sketches
I tend to go a little overboard with sketching… the ideation part helps me flesh out all the possibilities that I can think of for a potential logo design. I tried to experiment with the shapes of a book and camera lens, which essentially drills down to warping various rectangles and circles together.
After presenting these to the client, they decided on five options amongst the iterations I drew.

DESIGN PROCESS
Iterations
The client preferred to stick with a gold/yellow and black combination, so I offered two pallets to choose from, along with variations of the selected options from my sketch stage. After another meeting, we narrowed our options down to the logos marked in green.

Final Logo
The bottom left logo was more legible and easier to remember, so I revised it by simplifying the elements and adding colors to accent parts of the design. I emphasized the book reading element of the logo by coding the pages of the book in yellow, and highlighting the lens and flash to bring it into cohesion.

TAKEAWAY
Combining two concepts to make a logo— education and photography— was exciting and challenging. I drew multiple iterations and connected them through pages of mood board inspiration. I found it rewarding to help my client get the ball rolling on his start-up company.
Improvements for next time:
As a designer, I realize that perfectionism overtakes our creative headspace. My tendency to overcompensate for my iterations is a habit I’m still learning to break.
For instance, offering too many options can overwhelm the client. In the future, I would use my judgment to narrow down my sketch concepts when presenting the drafts to the client so they can easily decide on their final draft.
